A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a non-profit group or institution that operates independently of a government, usually with a mission-driven focus on humanitarian or development objectives. NGOs are often referred to as civil society organizations and can be large or small, operating at the community, national, or international level. They can be advocacy or service organizations, and may receive government funding.
